Before the switch to the Tesserent managed security service, Yarra Ranges Council used a number of different solutions to filter web and email traffic, and a firewall to secure and protect the network.
Yarra Ranges Council is located on metropolitan Melbourne’s eastern fringe, with parts just 45 minutes from the CBD. Stretching from the foothills of the Dandenongs, through the Yarra Valley and beyond to the top of the Black Spur.
It is known for its beautiful natural environment and its strong sense of community. The Council covers an area of almost 2,500 square kilometres, the largest area of any metropolitan council and is home to more than 151,000 people.
Before the switch to the Tesserent managed security service, Yarra Ranges Council used a number of different solutions to filter the web and email traffic, and a firewall to secure and protect the network.
“That wasn’t ideal,” says Craig Whalley, the Council’s Manager Information Services. “Having multiple applications not only requires management and maintenance of the infrastructure for the devices and software, it also increases the overhead associated with managing them. Network security requires a specialist and we do not have the budget or resources for that.”
Another issue was that there simply weren’t sufficient resources to collate and analyse the log files generated by the different solutions in a meaningful way. This issue was highlighted in the Council’s internal and external audits
“We had already outsourced our backup and disaster recovery management to enable us to focus on our primary core activities including managing the corporate network,” says Craig. “We were looking to do the same with our network security.”
Based on the recommendations of dozens of other local councils and their own disaster recovery and backup provider, the Council contacted Tesserent to discuss the service and the Council’s requirements.
The Tesserent managed security service ticked all the Council’s boxes. “When we outsource services, we are looking for a partner, experts that can help us. And that is what we’ve found in Tesserent,” Craig says. “With self-managed solutions there is no ongoing relationship with the providers and suppliers, with Tesserent we’ve got someone to call on.”
“When we log calls, the response of the Tesserent helpdesk is always brilliant. And they do a great job of keeping us in the loop.”
“Our network is now pro-actively monitored 24 hours a day, the whole year round,” says Craig. “We receive weekly reports about all relevant activity and Tesserent notifies us immediately of any irregularities. So we’ll be getting the auditor’s seal of approval this year for our network security management.”
Yarra Ranges Council has been a very satisfied Tesserent customer for four years now. In 2013, the council appointed tesserent to provide a Secure WAN solution with Internet provisioned.
“The move to the Tesserent managed security service has been a huge win for us,“ says Craig, “it’s one thing less for us to worry about. The team at Tesserent has been so good that we just awarded them our Internet service that will be delivered via a clean pipe solution. We are moving all of our security to the Tesserent cloud.”
“The switch to the Tesserent managed security services was basically costneutral with the savings from replacing the previous solutions and we now get a lot more value for our money. Our network is constantly monitored and protected by security experts.”
“The move to the Tesserent managed security service has been a huge win for us.”
