GovDC was formed as part of the NSW Government Data Centre Reform Project which seeks to address the NSW Government’s increasing demand for computing capacity, reliability, network connectivity and data storage.

The Data Centre Reform project also aims to: end the competition between agencies for independent data centre leases, disaggregated demand for data centre capacity, ad-hoc and inefficient procurement approaches, and provide a dedicated Government facility.

A Government Private Marketplace was created, which promoted the virtualisation of agencies’ data centre infrastructure, as the marketplace offers agencies services provided ‘as a Service’ through the Managed Services Backbone (MSB).

Secure Logic (now Tesserent) was engaged to develop the design, and build the MSB, with security being applied at all layers of the design. Secure Logic currently manage and operate the MSB for NSW Government, and monitor security threats through the 24×7 Cyber Threat Intelligence Centre.
